University of Michigan Donors: ACT NOW!

How to use it: Anyone who regularly donates or has ever donated to the University of Michigan has power to help us get a fair contract. This letter provides two templates: 1) a letter for you to reach out to potential donors whom you might know, and 2) a template for you and them to reach out to the University Regents, President, and Provost to tell them that you will not donate to the University again until Lecturers have a fair contract.

If you are a donor, once you have written to the University leadership yourself, forward this template to everyone you know who might be able to use it. If you are not a donor, forward the template anyway to ask donors you might know to use it.

Informing Your Students: Teach-In Presentation

How to use it: This PowerPoint can be played during Michigan time or class time. It is an excellent organizing and educational tool that we want to spread widely. You can:

  • Play it online and speak to your students about LEO as the presentation plays
  • Play it online and simply let it run (you may even leave the room, if you wish)
  • Post the link (bit.ly/LEOPPT1) online to Canvas and social media
  • Email out to colleagues and students past and present

Informing Your Students: Flier

How to use it: This brief informational flier covers the most important, basic information about Lecturers’ working conditions and what it means to #RespecttheLecs. This PDF version of the flier can be emailed out, posted on Canvas, or printed and posted on doors. Here’s a printable version that can be printed double-sided and cut to make a half-sheet flier:

Informing Your Colleagues: Tenure Track Outreach

How to use it: This template letter provides a basis for you to write to your tenure track or tenured colleagues to ask them for their solidarity and support in our fight for a fair contract, which will ultimately benefit our students and the university as a whole. You can pick and choose from the provided template text as you wish to craft your own emails, but it gives you an easy starting place and a list of important asks of TT colleagues.

Informing Your President, Provost, and Regents: Letter Writing Campaign

How to use it: Your personal story as a Lecturer at the University of Michigan matters greatly in our effort to win a strong contract this round of bargaining. Many Lecturers have delivered powerful and moving statements at the bargaining table that detail their love of teaching and the struggles they encounter. But not everyone is able to attend bargaining to share their story in support of the Union’s bargaining platform. Therefore, we encourage you to write a letter to President Schlissel and Provost Philbert, with the Regents of the University of Michigan cc’d. Read more here.

Informing Our Campus: Door Signs!

LEO Lecturers Poster_Letter 180128
How to use it: We want to flood the University of Michigan campuses with these 8.5×11 door signs to increase our visibility and make sure this issue is on people’s minds. If you have an office door – whether a faculty office, graduate student office, research lab, student org office, or other – and you can post one of these, come by the LEO offices at 339 E. Liberty St. in downtown Ann Arbor to pick one up OR email angie@leounion.org to arrange a drop-off of door signs.

Talking About Our Contract Campaign: The Bunsis Report

The Bunsis Report is a document prepared by financial expert and Eastern Michigan University Professor Howard Bunsis. The report gives an in-depth analysis of University of Michigan finances with a focus on the enormous contribution that Lecturers make to the profitability and educational mission of this institution, contrasting this data with the absolute paucity of Lecturer salaries and the stagnation of wages we have experienced.

How to use it: Below you can check out the slideshow version of the Bunsis Report. The PDF version is available here.

Talking about Our Contract Campaign: Faculty Salaries at UM Dearborn vs. Other Employees

This graph demonstrates the disparity between the FTE salaries held across all faculty members, including tenure track and non-tenure track, and the highest salaries paid to UM employees, typically those in the top echelons of administration. This data demonstrates how salaries across the board for faculty and staff members are kept depressed while salaries for top administrative officials have sky rocketed.

How to use it: This graph makes the case for solidarity across our campuses.

Informing Our Campus: Tabling

Tabling Picture

Every Wednesday from 10AM-2PM, we table somewhere on Ann Arbor campus to engage with students, encourage them to sign on to our Action ListServ, and collect their version of “yellow cards” where they express their interest in our working conditions so that administration knows they’re paying attention. If you’re interested in joining a table and contributing to our effort to educate this campus about Lecturers’ fight for a fair contract, shoot an email to erin@leounion.org to hear more about tabling that week. We look forward to seeing you!
